When winemaker, Hugo Basson, is not busy making wine, you will find him in the vineyards alongside brothers Thys and Tobie. Today these three brothers and business associates have 7 sons to follow in their footsteps, but it all started four generations back in 1906, with grandfather Matthys. In 2005, Hugo who inherited his grandfather’s wine making talent, started making his own wine, building his success with fruity and elegant Red Wines and beautiful Swartland Chenin Blanc. Hugo fell in love with Malbec, after a visit to Argentina in Visitors attended from all over the country to come and experience the good quality wines the Swartland Winemakers had to offer. Make sure not to miss this popular event next year. We offer well-equipped chalets, four dams for swimming and unspoiled fynbos with beautiful scenery for all nature lovers. The two chalets is situated in the Paardeberg mountain and overlook beautiful scenery of vineyards and views as far as the mountains of Tulbagh. After a tour to Argentina in 1991, Hugo tasted his first Malbec and instantly fell in love with this cultivar. There was too much wood present and too many other varieties involved. But this was the beginning of the love affair for the Malbec King of South Africa and from that moment he new he wants to perfect the recipe! The whole wine making process is very hands-on task and grapes are handled with the utmost care. All the grapes are naturally fermented in open fermentation tanks. Overall Annex Kloof Malbec has received numerous Awards nationally and internationally and is rated as the number one Malbec in South Africa.
